a system call that should never fail has failed

January 13, 2010 | Print | Bookmark | Share | Email

I recently had this problem with Vista - "a system call that should never fail has failed", "error 1747 the authentication service is unknown", which reminded me of my first Vista frozen few days ago. This is the first time after over a year of using Vista. That is very good compared to previous Windows that I used from 3.1 to NT servers.

My wireless finder did not find any network. My ethernet connect stop working... My internet stoped working. Somewhere I got a sugguestion - reinstalling Vista. That was the last thing I want to do. After going a few hours going through different services, components, etc. in Vista I could not find anything wrong. Even going back to a good system default a few days ago did not help. I had to go online on a different computer and found the solution from this link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistasecurity/thread/f4ce24aa-ae9d-4927-8b0f-52f3ddc4fbd9:

Open cmd - command prompt with administrative rights and run this "netsh winsock reset" then restart the computer and so far everything seem to work. Thanks to internet community. I remember over ten years ago when we had to find solution like this without the internet. We have come a long way. Another ten years and the internet resources continue to grow at this pace, I wonder how our lives are going to change for the better...
